Roving Safety Trophy
September 2004

The Safety Department will be starting a new incentive program that will kick off September 1, 2004. There will be two teams involved in this program. The roving trophy will be awarded each quarter to one of the two teams. The names of these two teams are Regional North (Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C.) and Regional South (Virginia and all points south). The object of this game is to see which team can hang onto the Safety Trophy the longest and to have the lowest Accident Incident Rate (A.I.R.) at the end of the year. The Team with the lowest A.I.R., calculated for the entire year, will claim the bragging right for having the lowest A.I.R. for the company and will be honored with a Crab Feast to be held in the equipment yard of the region that wins. All employees permanently working in the winning region will be invited to the annual Crab Feast to be held in September.

Rules are as follows:
The contest will run from September 1st to August 31st each year.
The trophy will be moved and presented quarterly to the region that has the best A.I.R. The quarters will be from September 1 to November 30; December 1 to February 28; March 1 to May 31; and June 1 to August 31. The A.I.R. formula to be used to figure the winner is as follows:
By region we will take the total number of workers' compensation accidents and multiply it by 50,000 (quarterly) or 200,000 (annually) and divide it by the total number of man-hours worked during that period. In calculating workers' compensation accidents we will not count first aid or those occurrences that are reported where medical attention is not requested. In addition to workers' compensation accidents, we will also count all property damage claims, whether our property or third party property, unless the damage was solely the result of an Act of God, vandalism that was not preventable, or third party inflected. To measure property damage claims, we will add a tenth of one point to the A.I.R. for each full $1,000 of property damage.
The trophy will be displayed in the offices of the two equipment yards. Permanent stands will be installed in these offices for the trophy to be displayed on. A plaque will be affixed to the trophy stand saying Regional Safety Trophy. The plaque will allow others to know what should be on the stand when it is empty.
The region with the best record for the year will have the region's name engraved on the trophy.
